Knee joint replacement surgery Dan Fick

A total knee replacement is a type of orthopaedic surgery designed to replace a worn out or damaged knee joint with an artificial joint known as a prosthesis or prosthetic joint.

You might hear a surgeon talking about total knee arthroplasty – this is another name for knee replacement.

Total knee replacement surgery is recommended for people with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or disabling knee pain that has not improved with other treatments such as anti-inflammatory pain medication, physiotherapy or lifestyle changes like increased activity or weight loss.

Unicompartmental knee replacement , also called uni knee replacement, is a type of partial knee replacement surgery that resurfaces only a portion of the knee that is damaged, for example, as a result of osteoarthritis of the knee.

It’s an alternative to total knee replacement where the entire joint is removed and replaced with prosthetic parts.

ACL reconstruction surgery involves replacing the ligament with a piece of healthy tendon. Although tendons are different types of tissue to ligaments, they begin to act like ligaments once in place.

During this surgery, small surgical incisions are made around your knee to insert an arthroscope, a device that enables inspection of the inside of the joint via a video monitor.

Using the arthroscope, the torn ligament is removed and  tunnels are drilled into the bottom of the thighbone and the top of the shinbone. A new ligament is created from your hamstring tendon or the middle of your patella tendon. This graft is passed through the tunnels that have been drilled and screwed or stapled into place until it heals into the bone.

knee arthroscopy

Knee arthroscopy is a type of keyhole surgery that enables your orthopaedic surgeon to view your knee joint without the need for a large incision.

As well as diagnosing knee problems, knee arthroscopy can be used to relieve painful symptoms caused by damage to the cartilage surfaces or other soft tissues surrounding the joint.

A tibial tubercle transfer is a surgical procedure performed to treat certain knee conditions, particularly those related to patellar (kneecap) instability or malalignment. This procedure involves repositioning the attachment point of the patellar tendon on the tibia (shinbone) to improve the alignment and stability of the kneecap.

Beginning with your initial consultation, our team will work with you to meet your health goals. We will design a treatment plan specifically tailored to your needs. If surgery is required, we will guide you through every stage of the process before, during and after your joint surgery.

"Having knee surgery is a big decision. Please ask us anything at any stage of your journey. Our team has many years of experience in orthopaedic care and we'll be with you every step of the way."
