Types of Hip Joint Replacement Surgery available.

A total hip replacement is a type of orthopaedic surgery designed to replace a worn out and damaged hip joint with an artificial joint known as a prosthesis or prosthetic joint.

You might hear a surgeon talking about total hip arthroplasty – this is just another name for hip replacement.

Total hip replacement surgery is recommended for people with disabling hip pain that has not improved with other treatments such as anti-inflammatory pain medication, physiotherapy or lifestyle changes such as increased activity or weight loss.

Hip joint replacement surgery Dan Fick Hip resurfacing

Hip resurfacing, or partial hip replacement can be a good alternative to total hip replacement for younger, active men, who are more likely than women to have the hip space to accommodate the large hip implant,” says Dan. “We can achieve good outcomes if you’re under 60 and have strong, healthy bones. It’s good to have a large frame – people who are small-framed or older might be at greater risk of complications like bone fracture.

Hip Arthroscopy

Hip arthroscopy is a type of joint preservation surgery, as opposed to joint replacement surgery. The goal is to fix up any damage to your own joints to reduce joint pain and help you regain your mobility.

“Because hip arthroscopy is a type of keyhole surgery, your recovery time will be shorter than if you had open surgery like we use for hip or knee replacements,” Dan explains.

“This results in less pain and joint stiffness for you so you will very quickly be able to return to doing the things you love.”

This is a type of surgery to repair damage to the soft tissues surrounding your hip joint if you’re still experiencing pain after having a total hip replacement. Although Dan does not perform soft tissue hip reconstruction surgery himself, he can assess your condition and advise you on whether this might be what you need.
